  2013 Christopher U. Kitalong
School: City University of New York
Field of study: Christopher U. Kitalong, a Ph.D. candidate at City University of New York, will research the ethnobotany and pharmacology of Phaleria nisidai, a medicinal plant species used by native Palauans, including those with Type 2 Diabetes or who are obese. He will collaborate with local healers and physicians to organize a study of specific species used to treat diabetes and compare results with patients who use traditional treatments. Positive results from the use of Phaleria nisidai would provide scientific grounding for the use of this native medicine and could motivate further research and funding.

School: University of Missouri in St. Louis
Field of study: Robbie Hart, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Missouri in St. Louis, will research the comparative ethnobotany of rhododendrons in Northwest Yunnan, China. The southern Chinese province is a center of rhododendron diversity. Two ethnic groups, one indigenous and one more recently arrived, provide traditional ecological knowledge and illustrate significant intercultural differences. Robbie is testing various assumptions based on information formulated from those considered most knowledgeable as that information is used as a plausible metric for other ethnobotanical studies.
  2013 Dr. Abdolbaset Ghorbani Dahaneh
School: Uppsala University
Field of study: Dr. Abdolbaset Ghorbani Dahaneh, of Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden, will research the development of a next-generation sequencing molecular identification system to curb the illegal trade in orchid tubers (Orchidaceae rhizoatous) for medicinal product sale in Iran. His project seeks to create a DNA bar-coding method that will allow rapid, reliable identification of orchid tubers. He will conduct field and survey work in Iran to determine which species are being used most and collect a range of samples. This research could impact wild orchid populations by protecting and discouraging the collection of endangered or toxic species.

School: Carol Davila University of Medicina and Pharmacy in Romania
Field of study: Will conduct ethno-botanical research of Aromanian populations in the Southern Balkan Peninsula in order to make a comparative assessment of several distinct populations in Albania, Greece, Romania & Bulgaria. The Aromanians date back to the 6th century AD, and now live in small ethnic enclaves in several countries, maintaining their cultural practices. This group has never been studied, and Dr. Barca will document

School: University of Illinois
Field of study: A Ph.D. student from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will study the utilization of useful plants in "forest gardens" by the Classic Maya of Yalbac, Belize. The area has been abandoned since 900 AD, marking the end of the Classic Mayan Period. The researcher has been made aware of enormous differences in the amount of poison plants in unsettled areas and non-poison plants in the settled areas. It appears the Mayans created "forest gardens" of edible and medicinal plants. Study of their practices may contribute valuable understanding of sustainable living practices.

School: North Carolina State University
Field of study: Ph.D. student, North Carolina State University. His research will explore the biochemical mechanisms of action for six Ecuadorian plants that are used to treat malaria in southern Ecuador and have been subjected to little or no study. Extract identification for analysis comparable to traditional remedies will increase antimalarial efficacy.
  2012 Ripu Mardham Kunwar
School: Tribhuvan University , Nepal
Field of study: Ph.D. student, Tribhuvan University, Nepal, will research the diversity and use of medicinal plants of far west Nepal in elevation and changing climate gradients. The researcher is interested in the effects of climate change on the availability of medicinal plants at various altitudes. Interviews and sample collections will be taken at nine different locations ranging from low to very high altitude. This data will provide valuable information to create a base line for future comparative studies.

Field of study: Will use forest transect surveys and ethnobotanical interviews to explore factors influencing patterns of use of medicinal and edible palm species in portions of Peru and Bolivia.
