2012 Kunwar Singh School: University of North Carolina Field of study: A Ph.D. student in the Geography Program and Applied Geographic Information Science at University North Carolina, Charlotte. He will use LiDar, which measures speed, distance and rotation through light detection, to do rapid assessments of urban forestry health in Charlotte. This new methodology will aid in developing more accurate urban forestry management plans. |

2012 Yujuan Chen School: Virginia Tech Field of study: Is a Ph.D. candidate in Urban Forestry at Virginia Tech. She is studying compacted urban soils to determine if they can be rehabilitated to improve tree growth and if this rehabilitation will assist in sequestering carbon and mitigate storm water runoff. |

2012 Jessica Vogt School: Indiana University Field of study: Beginning her Ph.D. at Indiana University, Bloomington. Her research, working with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, will evaluate the social and biophysical effects of urban tree planting programs and the role of neighborhood tree planting participants. |

2012 Kyle Cooper School: Virginia Tech Field of study: Finishing his five-year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program at Virginia Tech and has won this award for the second year in a row. He is synthesizing previously researched design elements of trees and forests, to produce a manual for fellow landscape architects which will illustrate how urban forestry positively affects the physical and mental well-being of the urban community. |
